The Yorkshire Building Society Morecambe Agency in the West End is to close in December, it has been announced.
The site on Claremont Road will shut for the final time on Thursday, December 3, at 4:30pm.
YBS agencies are very similar to branches, offering the majority of the same services, but do not offer services such as insurance products and withdrawal limits can also differ.
In a letter to customers, the company said: "The Morecambe Agency has had a change in circumstances, so has made the difficult decision to close the agency.
"Please note that it’s only the YBS agency part of the business that is closing.
"After careful consideration, we’ve decided not to replace it with an alternative outlet in Morecambe at this stage.
"We understand this may be disappointing news and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.
"We would like to thank the agency team for their dedication and contribution over the years.
"Please be assured that your money is safe and that this won’t affect any accounts you have with us.”
Yorkshire Building Society said when reviewing data that Morecambe customers in the last 12 months comprised 749 active members (which was 57% lower than the average members across their branches and agencies); 61 members made a monthly transaction at the agency; 192 members used the agency frequently; 62% of members that had an open account opened at that particular agency hadn’t used the agency in the last 12 months.
They said the closest YBS branch was in Lancaster at 1-5 Ashton Walk, St Nicholas Arcades, Lancaster. Customers can also bank online via their website or mobile app.
A spokesperson for Yorkshire Building Society said: “Following a change in circumstances, the agent in Morecambe has made the decision to close the Yorkshire Building Society agency.
“While we understand this is disappointing for customers, we’ve written to those who have used, or live close to, our Morecambe agency to explain how they can continue to manage their accounts with us, whether that’s online, over the phone or face-to-face.
“Our branch in Lancaster is less than five miles away and our colleagues there are ready to meet customers’ needs and help them deal with the change.”
