658 knives recovered during week of action including Lancaster and Morecambe

A week of knife crime awareness was held

Police have recovered 658 knives during a week of awareness into knife crime in the county including the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

Officers recovered the knives through surrender bins, stop searches and warrants, across West Division which also includes Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

As part of the week of knife crime awareness through the police's national campaign Op Sceptre, they also visited 40 retailers, and supported Trading Standards teams with 26 test purchasing operations.

Police said that of these, two failed selling a knife to an underage buyer and officers are working with Trading Standards to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

They also attended 21 community and educational events, including at schools.

"Although this was undertaken as part of a week of action, it is a small snapshot into the work that is done on a weekly basis in Morecambe to prevent knife crime," said a Lancashire Police spokesperson.

"Don’t forget…if you have any information about knife crime in your area, call 101 or report anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. In an emergency always call 999.

Earlier this month, Morecambe FC Community Foundation - the football club's official charity - hosted a Knife Crime Awareness event at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium to support Sceptre week.

"We had numerous schools from across the Morecambe area come in and take part in workshops, and listen to powerful speeches about knife crime and the consequences it can have on people," said a post on the Foundation's Facebook page.

"Big thank you to Nathan Parker, Merosworld West, Lancaster Boxing Club, Leo's Boxing, Dan Whittaker, Rebecca White and Clive Grunshaw for coming in and being part of the event."

*If you have a knife that you would like to dispose of safely and anonymously, knife surrender bins are available at the bus station opposite Domino's Pizza in Central Drive, Morecambe, or by Carlisle Bridge in Lancaster.
