Annual recovery run on Morecambe Prom to bring community together

The Bay 5K Recovery Run takes place this Saturday.

The biggest recovery run in the north of England is set to return to Morecambe Promenade.

The Well Communities Bay 5K Recovery Run this Saturday (September 5) is a celebration of recovery and the positive changes that can happen when people are supported to build healthier, more meaningful lives.

Runners will take on a stunning coastal route along the Prom, starting at 11am (registration opens at 9.30am).

Recovery Run organisers The Well Communities is a lived experience recovery organisation helping people to overcome addictions of various sorts.

"The Bay 5K Recovery Run isn't just about crossing the finish line, it's about showing that no one has to walk or run their journey alone," said a post on the event Facebook page.

"We're bringing together people in recovery, families, friends, and supporters across our The Well Communities to celebrate hope, challenge stigma, and promote health and wellbeing.

"Whether you run every day or have not run in years, your presence makes a difference. Walk, jog, or cheers with us along the Morecambe prom."

To help cover essential costs and ensure the event can run far into the future, organisers are asking for a suggested donation of £5-£10 per entry.

This includes a Bay 5K T-shirt for the first 100 people to register, finisher medals for the first 150 across the line.

Some of them are experienced runners, while some have only started running since taking part in a 'Couch to 5K' programme held by Morecambe Community Runners, who hold runs on the Prom every Tuesday and Thursday evening, and many are running as part of their recovery from addiction.

The award-winning Morecambe Community Runners was set up by Stuart Nevin to help get people off their couches and into running.

Last year, Stuart, Debbie Doody and Peter Jones from Morecambe Community Runners appeared on Beyond Radio to talk about the Bay 5K Recovery Run.
