An elderly couple from Morecambe have been the victims of fraud by someone posing as a police officer.
Police are investigating the report of courier fraud which happened on June 25.
The couple, in their 80s, received a phone call from someone purporting to be a police officer in London who explained someone had been using the man’s bank card.
They were persuaded to go to a bank and withdraw a quantity of money, that money later collected from their home – with the promise it would be returned.
A police spokesperson said they want to make sure no one falls victim to similar offences.
"We are very aware that those most at risk of these scams may not be on social media, and whilst we are doing all we can to make sure this message reaches those, we also want to ask for your help," said a police spokesperson.
"If you know someone – a parent, a grandparent, a friend, a neighbour who may be vulnerable to these scams, please take five minutes out of your day to explain this to them, and let them know how to keep themselves safe.
"Some key points to mention are:
"You never know who is on the other end of the line – just because someone knows your full name and address doesn’t mean they are who they say they are.
"Your bank or the police will NEVER call you and ask for personal information, including bank details or pin numbers. They will NEVER offer to pick up bank cards or items from your address.
"If you have any doubts that a phone call is genuine, hang up. Then, either use a different phone or wait 20 minutes before calling the police, Report Fraud or your bank. Sometimes, fraudsters will keep the line open waiting for you to use the phone.
"You can install call blockers or register with a telephone preference service to stop unsolicited calls. Your telephone provider can assist with this.
"If you feel worried or concerned about a call, tell the police or someone you trust."
If you think you, or someone you know may have been a victim of fraud, you can report it to police on 101 or Report Fraud on 0300 1232040
