A legendary dance teacher who has taught in our local area for 45 years has been honoured with a major award for services to dance.
Sharman Robinson has been awarded the fellowship of bbodance (formerly the British Ballet Organisation) in recognition of her longstanding support and dedication to dance.
Sharman founded her own dance school in Bolton-le-Sands in 1977, which is now the Robinson Read School of Dance, and has taught countless dancers over the years.
Now 72, she continues to teach dance to people from the ages of two to 87, and says she has no intentions of stopping!
"I never expected it, it came out of the blue," said Sharman, who lives in Halton.
"I feel honoured and very privileged. I am so lucky that I was trained in dance, it's my passion, I went on to do it as a career, and I'm still doing it now. I can't think of a more rewarding job. I feel at home in the dance studio and I can't remember a Saturday when I haven't had my dance shoes on!"
Sharman was taught to dance at the age of 13 by local teacher Madame Anne Ratcliffe and went on to become a professional dancer.
As well as continuing to teach at Robinson Read, she teaches 'Mature Movers' and 'Adult Ballet' classes for the Blue Moose Dance Company.
BBOdance thanked her for her contribution to its Northern Scholars Scheme and her work as regional representative for the North West Region of bbodance, where she is also an examiner.
