New reseach by addiction support group Action Rehab has highlighted an increase in binge drinking since the start of the pandemic.
Since COVID-19 lockdowns began 54% of people have reported an increase in their drinking behaviour with 32% admitting they now binge drink more frequently. As a result Action Rehab, who support people suffering from drink and drug addiction, are asking people across the district to think twice about the amount of alcohol they are consuming.
Binge drinking is at its highest during the festive period and the organisation believe that the impact this has on a number of issues will be much greater than usual this year due to the pandemic. The group are highlighting these worrying statistics as Christmas binge drinking already increases the number of road accidents by 17% and increases the average A&E admissions by 8%. The challenges currently faced by our local hospitals due to COVID -19 could be greatly increased as a result of having to deal with A&E admissions due to excessive alcohol intake. As such Action Rehab are endorsing the Drink Aware campaign message for people to drink more responsibly.
