Sadness as child care club for Morecambe primary schools closes down

Poulton Memorial Hall

A much-loved before and after school child care club in Morecambe has had to shut due to economic pressures.

The Lighthouse Club had its final session on Thursday before permanently closing.

The club provided wraparound child care for pupils of Poulton-le-Sands and Morecambe Bay Primary Schools for the past four years, at Poulton War Memorial Hall.

"As we close for the final time, the Lighthouse Club team would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last four years," said a post from the Lighthouse Club team on Thursday.

"Revd Chris and Morecambe Parish Church had a vision that supported Poulton-le-Sands CE Primary School and allowed families in the local area to work and improve their lives.

"Adding Morecambe Bay to the mix only strengthened this.

"We based everything we did around the children, their needs and their family’s needs.

"Everything we did, was done with love and the children’s best interests at heart.

"It wasn’t always easy and it was frequently loud and messy but we have made memories that will last. We’ve created love that will last.

"We wish everyone a relaxing summer and the best of luck for September and the future.

"This is the last post from us. If you need anything, please email admin@morecambeparish.church.

"Be safe and be kind. Thank you for sharing your children and thanks for the memories."

The announcement of the closure was made in a letter published on the Lighthouse Club's social media towards the end of June.

"It is with deep sadness and sincere regret that we must announce that Lighthouse Club is facing permanent closure," it said.

"Owing to ongoing financial and operational challenges, it has become clear that Lighthouse Club will not be able to reopen in September. The final session will therefore be the afternoon session on Thursday July 16 2026.

"The continuing economic pressures have made it increasingly difficult for us to sustain the high standard of wraparound care that our schools, families and local community have come to rely upon.

"Morecambe Parish Church and the Lighthouse Club are heartbroken to share this news. We are immensely proud of the wide-ranging and positive impact Lighthouse Club has had over its years of operation, and we know how much it has meant to the children, families, schools and staff who have been part of its life.

"However, Morecambe Parish Church is no longer able to continue absorbing the financial losses that have begun to build.

"We recognise that this news will be upsetting and difficult for many, and we are deeply sorry for the disappointment and disruption it will cause."

There were many supportive comments to the Lighthouse Club team after they announced the closure.

Hannah Louise said: "Your dedication to the children has been utterly heartwarming. You’ve done such a wonderful job...thank you."

Suzie said: "You guys have gone above and beyond. Job very well done."

And Wendy said: "Thank you so much for being there when we needed you. I’m forever grateful to you all."
