Morecambe and Carnforth named top two trending UK staycation spots

Morecambe has been named the fastest rising UK staycation spot by Booking.com

Morecambe is the fastest-rising place for British people holidaying in the UK - with Carnforth in second - says one of the world's largest online travel agents.

Booking.com's Summer Getaway Report, published today, had Morecambe number one in a list of Trending UK Staycation Hotspots, with its popularity up 106 per cent.

Carnforth placed second, up 86 per cent, ahead of Exmouth in Devon, Penzance in Cornwall, and Stratford-upon-Avon - said the popular accommodation website.

An article in The Daily Mail today reported that the rise in demand for UK staycations is one factor behind the popularity of Morecambe and the surrounding area, as well as a renewed interest from property investors and landlords - with the catalyst the impending start of work on the Eden Project Morecambe.

Work on the £100m eco-attraction on Morecambe Promenade is due to start in August, with an opening date of late 2028, and is expected to create a boom in Morecambe's tourism economy.

The recent second Netflix series of reality TV show At Home with the Furys, following former world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury and his family during their life in Morecambe before their move last year to the Isle of Man, is also cited as a reason for the town's popularity.

The Mail reports that in April, Parkdean Resorts reported a 147 per cent increase in onsite searches for their Ocean Edge park in Heysham, on the day the second season of the series landed on the worldwide streaming platform.

The national newspaper's article also hails the beauty of Morecambe Bay, the Promenade, the views of the Lakeland Hills, and local cafes such as Brucciani's, Half Moon Bay Cafe and the Clock Tower Cafe as reasons for Morecambe's success.

"This summer, we’re seeing holidays redefined," said Ryan Pearson from Booking.com

'While classic destinations remain hugely popular, travellers are becoming more intentional about why they travel – whether it’s to discover somewhere new, embrace a solo adventure or a child-free break, or to follow a personal passion.

"This year's trends show people feel more inspired and adventurous than ever before."
