Two popular attractions at a Lancaster park have reopened after several months of closure for repairs.
The Butterfly House and Mini Zoo at Williamson Park have been shut since February for essential maintenance and upgrades, said park owners Lancaster City Council.
In the cave and guinea pig areas there are new features and artwork while the Butterfly House has gained additional flowering plants to better support and attract butterflies.
A new chrysalis tank has also been installed, helping to improve hatch rates, alongside a newly added tank within the Butterfly House itself.
Elsewhere, enclosures for meerkats, marmosets and rabbits - as well as the cave interior - have all been given a fresh coat of paint, and new fencing has been introduced around the mammal area to improve the environment and safety.
“Williamson Park is one of the jewels in our district and these improvements not only enhance the experience for visitors, but also provide better environments for the animals in our care," said Councillor Paul Hart, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Environmental Services.
“Investment like this is worth every penny to keep Williamson Park a high-quality, family-friendly destination for everyone to enjoy.”
The improvement works have been delivered alongside a major investment programme to modernise the park's energy infrastructure.
This involves ongoing works to replace ageing gas heating systems with a more efficient and resilient energy system, including a new energy centre, air source heat pumps, upgraded heating controls and increased electrical capacity across the park.
Once complete, the council said Williamson Park will be fully removed from the gas network, improving energy efficiency, reducing future operating costs and supporting the long-term resilience of the site.
The council also has plans to create a new café and meeting place next to the Butterfly House and Ashton Memorial after demolition of the Pavilion Cafe which closed in 2025 due to storm damage.
