A town council has issued a warning after three drums of potentially hazardous oil were dumped near a river in Carnforth.
The 25-litre drums of oil were left at Shore Road close to a public bin near the River Keer footbridge, said Carnforth Town Council.
A council spokesperson said residents had spotted the oil drums, which had been safely collected and emptied into a waste oil tank at Dennis Barnfield Ltd’s yard in Carnforth.
He said the oil cans "presented a risk of environmental harm including leakage into the ground or nearby watercourse".
"A big thank you to Stewart, Andrew, and Dennis Barnfield Ltd for their prompt assistance in dealing with this incident," said the spokesperson.
"This type of behaviour is fly-tipping, which is a criminal offence. Anyone caught can face significant fines and even imprisonment.
"We ask everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or incidents:
"Let’s work together to keep Carnforth clean and safe for everyone."
