A mum is taking on a million steps challenge in memory of her daughter who made a huge difference to the lives of local children.

Debbie Hutton is walking one million steps in less than 90 days throughout August and October to raise funds for the Blossom Christmas Toy Appeal and Westgate Primary School.

Debbie's daughter Vicky Anne died in 2021, aged just 26.

Vicky, who worked at Westgate Primary, set up the toy appeal and her sister Rebecca continues to run it each year to ensure families who are struggling have presents during the festive season.

Debbie will be joined by some of the Westgate pupils during her challenge.

"I have a goal this year to be more like my beautiful daughter Vicky Anne...who was always kind, considerate and generous and always put others before herself," said Debbie on her fundraising page.

"So while remembering our Vicky through this anniversary I have decided to set myself a challenge to walk a million steps in less than 90 days and hopefully raise a little bit of monies that I can donate to the two causes close to Vicky's heart...Westgate Primary School and Blossom Toy Appeal.

"Our pain doesn't stop, the sadness is always deep and we miss her deeply. Time is not a healer but i want to try and continue the great drive and spirit and care that Vicky had for others.

"If any friends and family wish to help me push through this challenge by joining me on walks that would be amazing.

"Thank you in advance for your very kind support."

At time of writing, Debbie's fundraising page has raised £1040.

In December 2024 Rebecca was surprised by Radio 1 presenter Charlie Hedges, who knocked on her door and told her she was live on Greg James' breakfast show to millions of listeners.

She'd been nominated for the popular national radio programme's 'Festive Feeling' feature, which recognises unsung heroes who help people at Christmas time.

Rebecca told Beyond Radio in 2022: "We want to make sure we keep this going (because) of how amazing (Vicki) was, and what she did for people.

"She was so caring, she would do anything for anyone.

"Her death had a big impact on the community, and especially to us as a family. She was the rock of us all and kept us all going.

"She was just the best mum and she was the life and soul of everything. She'd walk in the room and she was just so funny. She's just a massive, massive loss in our family.

"Her job was sort of a social worker for Westgate School, making sure the kids were OK and they had everything.

"Vicky used to work with a lot of different charities at this time of year, to bring cars full of toys to the kids.

"We want to keep that legacy going to make sure that people are getting a toy at Christmas."
